Katy Trail: Days 1-2-3
Day 1: Bike Shuttle to The Katy Trial State Park Rock Island Spur Trail Head
Catching the bike shuttle in St. Charles was the perfect start to our adventure, as we rode out to the Rock Island Spur near Kansas City ready to hit the trail. We loaded up with two other couples also planning to bike the Katy Trail back to St. Charles, creating an instant camaraderie. After a quick gas stop, we continued on, dropping the other couples off on the Katy Trail before continuing on to the Rock Island Trail head, setting out ourselves. The trail was smooth, packed limestone, making for an enjoyable ride in good condition. As rain clouds gathered overhead, we optimistically thought we could beat the storm, but unfortunately, the skies opened up and we were soaked for the last two hours, battling heavy rain all the way back. We found our hotel (48.5 miles later) in Windsor MO, it would be our hotel for the next two nights.
Day 2: Windsor to Clinton and back to Windsor
Our day started out in Windsor, just 20 miles from the official start of the Katy Trail. The plan was to ride to Clinton and back, allowing us to cover the entire trail. After a scenic and invigorating ride, we enjoyed a wonderful breakfast in Clinton, taking a moment to savor the small-town charm. Before heading back to Windsor, we made sure to ring the bell that signals the start of the trail, marking the perfect kickoff to what promises to be an unforgettable adventure.
Day 3: Clinton to Boonville (53 Miles)
Up early and eager to hit the road, we started the morning with Uncrustables for a quick, no-fuss breakfast. The slight climb out of Clinton warmed us up as the sun began to rise, casting a golden glow over the rolling hills. Our stops included a wonderful breakfast and rich, smooth coffee at Ozark Coffee Company, where the cozy atmosphere was the perfect pick-me-up. As we continued our journey, the landscape opened up to reveal countless farms, each one a patchwork of fields and rustic charm, reminding us of the simple beauty tucked away in everyday life. Fifty miles later we spent the evening in Boonville. Dinner in Boonville found us at Hotel Fredrick, a beautifully renovated hotel that transformed its main lobby and ballrooms on the first floor into a welcoming bar and restaurant. The warm atmosphere blended historic charm with modern comfort, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. The meal we enjoyed was easily one of the best on the trail—fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared, leaving us already eager for our next visit.
